  • After you apply email your counselor to give permission to send your transcript to the college

  • Fee waivers are available- reach out to your school counselor

  • Start filling out the FAFSA- opens December 1st

  • You’ll need to sit down with your parents to fully complete the FAFSA

• November-March

  • If you’re attending a UW College- use this doc UW Scholarship Deadlines to determine when each college’s in house scholarships are due

• October-May

  • Complete any scholarships that you meet the criteria for using this Scholarship List

When you first walked through the doors of Horace Mann the furthest thing from your mind was your junior year and yet, here it is.  Your final two years of high school will go by quickly and it is our hope that this planning booklet can help assist you as you make your post-secondary plans.  This booklet is not meant to be all-inclusive, rather, it is meant as a guide for both you and your parent(s) to use in order to help make your transition from high school to your life after high school a little bit easier.

Our role as counselors is to provide counseling services that holistically address the needs of the student i.e. academics, post-secondary, and personal/social needs.  Our goal as a department is to meet the individual needs of each student to the best of our ability.

Just a thought or two to consider when meeting with College Representatives…

Meeting with College Representatives are highly encouraged and will be beneficial to you. These meetings provide you an opportunity to ask direct questions about each college or University's respective institution. Oftentimes, these representatives are the individuals who review your applications when you apply. Make sure to represent yourself well and make a great impression!

Below are typical questions representatives can answer. Use these as a starting point.

• How do I schedule a visit to your school?

• What is the next step after I apply?

• How do I pick/schedule/find a roommate?

• How much does it cost?

• How do I pay for it?

• How do I sign up for housing?

• Do I need to take or can I take my car?

• What do I do if I need to take my ACT test over?

• How do you decide if I am accepted?

• When will I know if I am accepted?

• What do I do once I am accepted?

• Do I have to live in the dorms?  How long?

• What do I do to transfer to another school?

• What activities can I participate in on campus?

• What is a typical schedule like?

• Anything else about the particular school/size/location/professors/etc.

These are just a few questions you may have.  ANY question is acceptable because there is a good chance that someone else is thinking about it, but is afraid to ask.
